Celebrating Carnival in Greece & Athens

Celebrating Carnival in Greece & Athens

With festivals and various celebrations for over three weeks, greeks prepare for the long- lasting Easter fast that follows. Dating back to ancient times and the events in honor of God Dionysus, carnival traditions still survive till recent days.
Each city in Greece is dressed with its most festive mood and customs and traditions are being revived every year. The peak of this 3 week period starts on “Tsiknopempti”, where all streets smell of barbecue and continues till Ash Monday (Clean Monday) when the Lent period officialy starts.

For those travelling in Greece these days, most of the parties and events are held on the last weekend before Clean Monday.
